Fluoridation – The Way Forward

Our recent webinar, Fluoridation – The Way Forward, drew wide interest from professionals across the country, exploring the successful expansion of water fluoridation in the North East of England — the first major test of the new powers under the 2022 Health and Care Act.

Chaired by Barry Cockcroft of the British Fluoridation Society (BFS), the session brought together public health leaders and dental professionals who shared practical insights and personal perspectives on implementing and advocating for community water fluoridation.

Phil Worsfold from the Department of Health and Social Care outlined key outcomes from the national consultation, which attracted over 3,000 responses. He underscored strong government backing for prevention and a 10-year commitment to consider further expansion.

Amanda Healy, Director of Public Health for County Durham, showcased how regional collaboration and leadership strengthened engagement and contributed to a collective voice in support of fluoridation.

Personal testimony from clinicians like Tom Robson and John Morris highlighted the clinical and social impact of fluoridation — particularly for children in deprived communities. Dental Nurse Sakina Needham powerfully reminded us that oral health is a right, not a privilege, and called for greater equity in access to care.

A lively Q&A rounded off the session, with the BFS encouraging all health professionals to get involved, access member resources, and help build confidence in community water fluoridation.
