What we do
The British Fluoridation Society was founded in 1969 to work for improved dental health in the UK through the introduction of water fluoridation schemes.
We are a not-for-profit limited company – Registered Number: 00953937 (England and Wales).
Our founding President was the human rights campaigner the Rt Hon Lord Avebury.
Previous Presidents/Vice-Presidents include former Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, and broadcaster, politician and physician Lord Michael Winstanley.
Our Aims
1. To promote improvement of dental health by securing the optimum fluoride content of water supplies (one part per million) in those areas where high levels of tooth decay remain a public health problem.
2. To promote and co-ordinate medical, dental, educational, and administrative efforts to achieve this.
3. To distribute information about dental health.
Our main activities
-
providing a scientifically-based information service about water fluoridation to: health bodies; local authorities; educational establishments; professional organisations; the media; politicians; and, the general public;
-
organising scientific meetings to promote oral health through water fluoridation;
-
working at local, national and international level in order to extend water fluoridation within the UK, or safeguard existing water fluoridation schemes;
-
contributing to the body of scientific knowledge on fluoride, water fluoridation and dental public health;

researching and producing scientifically sound, reader-friendly publications on water fluoridation.

responding to requests for information about fluoride and water fluoridation from individuals and organisations nationally and internationally;

continuing to support the fluoridation activity of the Departments of Health, local authorities and NHS bodies throughout the UK.

maintaining links and sharing information with international colleagues
